Why I Built SOLIS

The vacation that was not really a vacation—and the question that changed how I wanted to build a life.

By Laken Deckard · Founder, SOLIS

Before I tell you what SOLIS is, I want to tell you where it started.

It started with a vacation that was not really a vacation. I was in a beautiful place with the people I love most, yet I was still cooking, cleaning up, folding laundry, answering emails, and mentally counting everything waiting for me when I got home. I was there in body and absent in every other way.

I thought exhaustion was the price of ambition.

For years, I tried to meet expectations that could never fully coexist: work as if I had no children, and parent as if I had no work. The more capable I became, the more I learned to manage at the edges of my own life.

Being somewhere is not the same as being present.

That realization became a question: what would life look like if it were designed around alignment instead of everyone else’s expectations? Not a life with less ambition. A life with more intention around the systems, places, and experiences that make ambition sustainable.

Performance and presence belong in the same life.

SOLIS grew from that belief. It is a private advisory practice, but it is also a point of view: the environments around us shape how we show up. The right place, pace, and support can create room to think clearly, connect deeply, recover well, and arrive ready for what matters.

This Journal is where I will keep exploring that idea—through travel, leadership, systems, recovery, and the small shifts that make life feel more like your own. It is also where I will follow a growing SOLIS body of work around women’s professional identity, visible contribution, and the systems of support that expand independent decision-making and economic agency.
